コンビニ’s loyal customers

I’ve been living in Japan for a few years already and I still don’t understand a thing.

It doesn’t matter if it’s 5 am, ‘noon, 7 pm after work or 11pm… They are always there!
But who are these people parked at the konbini for eons? What are they doing? Why are they there? After work for example, don’t they want to go home and rest?

Yesterday at 11pm (for the first time) I went to buy a snack and bam! Parking lot was full and everyone inside their cars looking at their phones. When I got out of the car I saw a hand wave from the person parked next to me and I thought she was waving at me so I leaned over and looked inside… nope. She was attaching a blind to the window and reclining the seat, lol

Please, cast some light on my doubts 🤔

  1. Living with parents? or noisy kids at home? We all want that precious priv time. I’ve seen my next door neighbour do it too, this guy is parked outside his house and just cotching it in there with his phone out.

  2. I wonder whether sleeping in the car, letting the engine purr on, is cheaper than the a/c at home?

  3. I always guessed it was due to small, not appropriate for living house sizes.

I’m the west if we want space we usually have multiple rooms in our own houses.

  4. Some of them might be sales guys, taking a rest or replying to emails from their laptops between client visits. It’s quieter than a cafe, easier to find (especially if you need parking) and there’s access to bathrooms, food, printers, etc.
