The Shakoho(車庫法) in Japan is absolutely ridiculous

I live in Tokyo. I’ve been planning to buy a second car to take out on the track to do some laps. But parking lot around my place all takes like 30k yen. It would be too much to just get another lot. So I was looking to get a garage near the circuit in Gotenba. But it turned out that in Japan you can’t have your parking space more than 2km from your living space. It’s absolutely ridiculous. What if I suddenly have to go to Hokkaido for business trip to stay say 6mo, would I need to to move my car to Hokkaido then??

  1. No. You’d keep your main address as the one in Tokyo and leave your car there.

Space is at a premium in Tokyo.

If you were actually moving to Hokkaido as in filling out the moving out paperwork and moving to the new city, you’d be moving your car anyway.

Kei cars are popular because many wards and cities don’t require a registered parking space for Kei cars.

A lot of people “live” outside of Tokyo where they buy houses and have land to park and then rent a shoe box in Tokyo to sleep at during the work week.

  2. Would you give up your address in tokyo for a 6mo business trip? Regardless you’d probably take the car with you as you will need it a whole lot more than in tokyo.

  3. Yeah, if you wanna do Motorsport bud, you should probably move out to the countryside, out where I am, we just use the old mountain roads that aren’t used anymore.

  4. Some thoughts.

Check with some circuits. You can get rental space at some of them, and just never drive the car on the road. Temp plates can be had for about 7,000 yen for five days to transport the car.

Kei cars don’t need a parking space to be registered so you can rent your space anywhere. Kei cars can be loads of fun on the track.

Consider go-karting and renting a storage container for the kart. Go karts can be as fun or more than real cars and can save you a lot of money.

Meet someone else that wants to drive a race car and share with them. I know a few people here that do that.
