Short-term rental options (not in Tokyo or Kinki)

Hi all, my partner and I are thinking about a low-budget, low-effort vacation down the line that would last a month and basically fit the following details:

– stay in an apartment (basically any furnished private domicile for two with basic kitchen amenities, but ideally at the price of an apartment)

– eat most of our meals from the grocery store, eggs and bacon, one-pan stirfries, the like

– not be in a very dense area; semi-rural is ideal, but suburban is okay so long as it has access to day-trip getaways like onsen villages and beautiful valleys

– close enough to civilization that I could stop in every week or two to pick up a couple of fancy department store things, otherwise a moderately sized supermarket within walking distance is sufficient for amenities

– be decent to walk around in, maybe a couple of parks or temples, a cheap neighborhood izakaya or such

With that being said, there’s no need to offer me suggestions where to stay, what I’m specifically looking for is a service that can help me find the actual domicile. AirBnB doesn’t really have good rates for long-term hotels or really service nice areas outside of big cities. Most short-term rental services seem to focus on top 10 cities, especially Tokyo and Kinki. For example, if I wanted to be near Yufuin I’d be okay with Beppu or Oita City, but I can’t find short-term furnished apartment stays there.

So, tl;dr: are there good websites that cater to one-month furnished apartment stays in mid-sized towns?

  2. Man, I have NO idea.

No rental agency is going to be interested in doing just a month.

You’re basically asking for a hotel ir airbnb.. but you want to pay a lower rate.

Does airbnb let you negotiate? Like, message the renter and ask if they’ll give a discount for 4 weeks?

  3. Hello, you may want to look into **service apartments**. They are time flexible, self-serve, all-furnished apartment, like hotels but apartments if you want, not as easy to book as a Airbnb or an hotel but not difficult either (it take a few emails).

Rent will obviously be much higher than regular mansions or apartments (expect +50 to +100%), but it’s all-inclusive thus convenient, and probably cheaper than Airbnb that would offer the same level of quality.

I found many of these when I lived in Kyoto and Fukuoka. It’s unlikely you’ll find any in small towns though, in which Airbnbs might be the best option for medium-term rentals.

    Good luck!

  4. Idk about small cities but just causally looking on Airbnb for a month stay anytime and I see some as low as $640 for the whole month. Average seems around $1200. Seems pretty dang cheap to me for a whole month.

A lesser known city to tourists that has a lot to do, Kanazawa, had one for $774 granted it was in the winter and it rains/snows a ton.
