What are the possibilities and routes for me for moving to Japan from London?

Hello all,

I am a 24M living in London currently and I have been really interested and wanting to move to Japan (preferably Osaka or Tokyo) for a while now and this was only cemented after visiting Tokyo for the first time last month.

Trouble is, I don’t really know how possible ir is for me and and if possible what the potential routes are…

I have a BSc in Biomedicine and and MSc in Molecular Medicine from good universities here in the UK and currently work as an account manager/csm in a software company in London (just something I took to get to London) and I’m super keen to get a role as a trainee patent attorney here in London.

I know about the TEFL/English Teacher route but I’m curious as to the other possibilies there are for me too, along with other job routes I could take

If anyone has any advice or help that would be great to point me towards the right directions!

  2. This doesn’t apply unless you become or are already fluent in Japanese, but I’m assuming you’re not. I’d recommend just saving up a bunch of money and doing a working holiday for a year. Don’t do the ALT route and hinder your career. Language blocks you from most else, but even if you did get a job and have the language, a career might not be as transferable in this field if it’s to do with laws and regulations. I’d say don’t throw away any opportunities at your age, become a wizard at your job, get money, travel as often as you like to Japan.

**EDIT:** I saw your profile OP. It looks like you’ve just been on a holiday here and are feeling a bit lost in what you want to do with yourself. I don’t want to discourage you from Japan, I implore you to go. **But**, you’ve got rose tinted glasses on. Life here is not like being a tourist for a week, it’s not like being on a working holiday visa, it’s much tougher, and many people come, flop about for years until they’re poor, miserable, few friends, and no skills or experience. With you being young and having a potential career starting soon, please don’t throw that away. A gap year is fine, but you have so much time for that too. Get enough experience so that you can grab a job anytime, even after a year off once you’re done traveling.
