  1. Is there some kind of law that regulates charities and donations, such that someone collecting money for a cause would be liable if they don’t use the money for that cause? I know a bunch of people pooling resources for a cause I really, *really* disagree with and recently I’ve been thinking of running a fake charity to take their money so that they can’t use it to help that cause.

  2. I’m going to visit my parents in the states for a couple of weeks soon and I got insurance for the time I’ll be there, but I’ve never had to actually use it before. Obviously I hope I won’t this time either, but can anyone ELI5 how this process works?

I was under the impression that you would have to make a claim after the fact but does that mean you have to pay for everything up front? Or do you just not pay anything at the time and send the bills to the insurance provider afterward? What do you say to the hospital staff when they ask for your insurance information?

  3. Has anyone been treated for sleep apnea here? What does the diagnosis and process look like?

  4. So I’ve read on here that an adhd diagnosis can limit your ability to get life insurance for a mortgage. I’m pretty sure I have adhd but I already have a mortgage and would like to refinance at some point. I don’t want to be SOL. Any personal experiences here?

  5. Just got back from a trip to the States where my kid fell in love with all the different flavors of Gatorade Zero. I know this topic is old hat but why do Japanese drink manufacturers all use the same flavor for sports drinks???

  6. What’s the benefit of scanning the 7-Eleven app when making purchases? Since there’s no points.

I feel like every time I present the app to be scanned, after I select the payment method, the clerk needs to make changes to something.

Is there an option to scan the app before selecting the payment method?

  7. Is it possible to get a coffee at the conbini with your own reusable cup, or will the cashier’s brain short circuit?

  8. Are there bicycle shops in Japan that offers the service to assemble the bike you bought at another dealership?

  9. Questions for other educators out there:

When writing test questions, to me as an American I feel like questions are all their own separate little universes that define a premise in order to get the students to arrive at a logical conclusion according to that specific premise, even if the premise isn’t realistic or true.

Q1: Is this an accurate assessment of American/Western test question logic or am I dumb?

In Japan however, when writing test questions for things with government oversight like entrance exams, the premise of every question has to be true to reality, as if the question itself has no premise…or it has a supplemental premise within the understood premise of “reality.”

For example, during the pandemic I wrote a question containing “when the pandemic is over,” and was told that was NG because “there’s no guarantee the pandemic will end,” which was an incredibly pedantic and meaningless edit. This isn’t from one person, mind you, but from an entire group of test-writers.

Q2: Have you noticed this kind of logic in test questions here?

Q3: Why do they do it this way?

  10. What are some websites I can use to look for tech jobs with aside from LinkedIn, indeed, gaijinpot, and japandev?

  11. I hope this isn’t too stupid of a question.

Does the debit card from the bank (bank card?) not work as a payment method in most stores? If it does what button do I press to get it? The only one that looks like a card just sayd credit card in English.
