No coconut water in Japan?

I have been here for 3 weeks and always check the various stores when I go in. I have yet to see coconut water, which is puzzling considering Japan is so close to the Phillipines and other big coconut producers. Do the Japanese not like coconut water?

  1. I’ve found it in some grocery stores, but don’t think I’ve ever seen it in a convenience store.

I buy *copious* amounts of peach water instead.

  2. Try gyomu, I bought one there a long time ago. Not sure if they still have it though. They usually come in 1L cartons. You can also try stores for imported products, like Kaldi or Jupiter.

  3. There are a number of sari sari type stores around the city. I’ve seeing coconut water there. It’s also available at some shops selling Vietnamese and Thai imports.

  4. Lots of better super markets (but also gyomu super) and almost all Asia stores sell those. But have a hard time finding natural coconut powder. Most is the cooking type in a small pack with tons of additives.

  5. I think it’s a good business idea. Start a brand and get Konbinis to start carrying it. I would be much appreciative.

  6. Seijo ishi sometimes has it, but the bottle is small and isn’t cheap. Tastes good though!

  7. I found some in Yamaya.
They sometimes have some exotic and interesting choices of food and beverages etc

  8. There was a bit of a boom a few years ago it seemed. Was great on a hot summer day. Now it is slightly harder to find but as the other posters mentioned, it’s around. It does seem overpriced. By the way, barley tea and most green tea is rarely sweetened here. And these days there are several choices of black unsweetened coffee widely available, too.

Have you thought about how weird it is that many fruits in Japan are expensive as hell with cheap exporters super nearby? Like, the Philippines also produces tons of those little yellow mangoes and sells em super cheap, yet finding them in a Japanese store is a rarity and they’re probably gonna be expensive as hell.

Japanese people like domestic products, and from what I’ve heard, fruits especially are a total scam here built on the fact that fruits were historically scarce pre-globalization and people are used to paying a lot for them, so the country doesn’t import a huge amount of any of the non-basic ones and the rest are grown in small quantities to be expensive and fancy. Sucks that Philippine mangos be cheaper and more readily available in the USA than they are in Japan lmao
