8 days in Kyushu self-driving for family

I will travel to Kyushu in the middle of Sep (next month) for 8 days. We will be with a 5yo and I m 6 months pregnant. I am active and love nature/ museums but still with a kid and a big belly :)) so I have been doing a lot of reading on this forum to get some tips. Please help! I m not sure my plan make sense.

My itinerary is
Day 1:
-Land at Fukuoka Airport. Rent car
-Nazoin
-Dazaifu Tenmagu
-Ukiha Inari (Only if got time)
-Stay over at Kurume
Day 2:
-Should I visit somewhere interesting in Kurume or go to Yanagawa in the morning? No boat trip just walk around/ museum
-Kumamoto Castle
-Overnight at Kumamoto
Day3:
-Drive to Aso, explore various spot on mountains.
-afternoon to Kurokawa &stay
Day 4:
-Yufuin: floral village, lake
Overnight at yufu
Day5:
Im thinking Takachiho Gorge and the shrine but people say its overrated and not good in Sep. Should I better stay over in Beppu/ Oita ? Any advice?

Day 6: Drive back to Fukuoka/ stop for visit at Akizuki. Is this town good for september? It is called little Kyoto sounds very interesting.

Return car in Fukuoka

Day 7: Fukuoka -teamlab-Shop& eat

Day 8: Fukuoka

I m not a big fan of city and I m not sure what to do in day 8 😅. Should I use this extra day to stay in Aso or Kumamoto?

  1. Takachiho I went in April. Not sure why it would not be good in September. Is it overrated… well, it might be a bit overhyped as you see all the super beautiful pictures and might have the impression it’s much more spectacular than it really is.

Personally I might have had too high expectation but still thought it was nice. If you go, I would really suggest to stay for the night and go see the Kagura performance at the shrine, you have to book in advance, but it’s easy to book and pay online, just have to show the QR code received in the e-mail. Ok, honestly no idea how a 5yo would like it tho.

My nature experience that I probably preferred was different spots in Hyuga, the view along the coat was really impressive, there was nobody there but it absolutely deserved to be better known. I would not especially recommend for you as it would be quite a detour, my point is more that Takachiho is nice, but also really well known and might contribute to some overrating impression (not because it’s bad, but because people have too high expectations).
