Hello everyone
I recently received my マイナンバーカード at the local municipal office, and used it to set up a japanese bank account with ゆうちょ銀行, in which i was successful. I was also able to successfully sign into the main app, but the separateゆうちょ認証 app requires me to scan the nfc on my マイナンバーカード with my smartphone. After multiple attempts, my IPhone keeps saying “scan failed” every time. The ゆうちょ銀行 workers are also unsure of what the issue is. My IPhone is an unlocked American IPhone; could this be the issue?
Thank you for reading.

It sounds stupid, but have you tried turning your phone upside down? My partner has a Japan post account and an Android from Hong Kong, but it wouldn’t scan his my number card unless he turned his phone upside down.
Otherwise, I’d try just moving the card around to various parts of the phone.
I have a Japanese iPhone, and I don’t use that bank, but for other purposes, my experience is **do not** move it while it’s scanning. Try one position, leave it, try scanning, if that fails try another position, etc. the slightest movement would always cause it to fail.
I couldn’t use my phone either. I just gave up and bought a reader for 700 yen on Amazon.
I scan mine with my phone without much issue.
It might be a verbal command thing. Did you say outloud “phone scan card” in japanese? Try it
No problems on my pixel.
Scan it with the top part of your phone. Also, did you correctly input the password?
Sometimes it can take a couple seconds for the mynumber card for some reason, was a bit of a hassle when doing the furusato nozei but worked fine in the end.
Regarding your iphone origin, it’s possible it doesn’t work also if in the settings, your region is not Japan. For example you cannot set up a Pasmo unless you iphone is on the Japan region in the settings.
I have successfully scanned mine numerous times. Make sure the card is on a dark surface and the room light is as bright as possible. You have to hold the iPhone as steady as possible and make sure you’re not casting a shadow on the card. If you’re having trouble keeping the phone steady maybe prop it up on something to minimize movement. It’s a hassle but it can be done.
Took forever on mine; I have absolutely no idea what made it work when it did.
[This is where you have to place the card relative to your iPhone](https://tspace-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/7c6fc4fd22f3b70172cfd0141a3d3618.jpg). You’ll have to hold it there for a while.
Had the same problem. Could scan on the mynumber portal without problem, but the yucho bank gave an error every time. It turned out that the problem was the birth date. The Yucho application was in English, forcing christian calender years. The birth date on the mynumber card is in Japanese emperor years. Changed the yucho application language to Japanese, entered the Japanese birthday info and the mynumber card scanned without a problem.
Just in case any of the other comments didn’t work for you.
Love my local post office, but Yucho sucks as a bank.
Had the same issue with the 認証 app. Try to change your iPhone language to Japanese. That fixed it for me.
