Any suggestions on what to look out for when choosing an orthodontist in Japan?
How to avoid sketchy ones (all nations have this issue) or if any there are any orthodontists recommended in the Kyushu region.

Your local AJET organisation should be able to help you find resources that aren’t shite. Other than that, you could ask your supervisor for advice, or even perhaps kids at school with braces.
I’m not sure which part of Kyushu you would be at, but if you are placed in a big city like Fukuoka, you’ll have plenty of choices. However, if you are placed in the inaka, I think convenience should be your first concern?
A couple of Japanese told me they went to Korea or Thailand to do it. Way cheaper.
