Plan

I want to make the move to Japan. I’m 19 and already have experience living abroad alone, albeit not as far as Japan.

I dropped out of University last year due to disliking the course, and re-enrolled again for the same course which is due to start in a few weeks (stupid, I know). I did some research into what it takes to move to Japan, and 2 things became clear.

1) You need a Bachelors Degree.
2) You should probably speak Japanese at N2 Level.

Since I’m unsure of what I want to study at University, I’ve been considering going to Japanese Language School (for 2 years, starting April 2024). With 100% effort, they say that it’s possible to reach N2 in this time frame, but not guaranteed.

My plan afterwards would be to apply to a Japanese University and study in Japanaese. Then to apply for a job afterwards. I’ve read that University Ranking also seems to be quite important in Japan (my ex Uni is poorly ranked, so for that reason I also don’t want to go back there).

Based on what I’ve read so far, this seems to be the best approach. I have also heard about Shuukatsu from this sub (which I need to read more into), which would further prove this is the way. *Would appreciate if someone could explain more about this.

The money is not an issue. However some potential issues would be:

– Not achieving N2 level in the timeframe. That would really suck. I am a total beginner, but have started some self study, and enrolled in some evening Japanese classes.

– Change in mind about living in Japan.

– Graduating and entering Job Market at 26/27.

I would really appreciate some honest advice and thoughts on this.

  2. You are making the way more difficult than it needs to be. Get your degree first in your home country. Study Japanese causally. When you graduate, and if you still want to move to Japan, do language school. If you don’t, we’ll, you have a degree, which will pay dividends the rest of your life.
