Shimanami Kaido Recommendations, Beaches, Bites, and Sunset?

Four of us will be cycling the Simanami Kaido Sept 23/4. Just wondering if there are any particularly good beaches to stop and wade or swim. Not sure if it’s recommended or not. I also don’t live near an ocean, is it dumb to swim in salt and then cycle?

We will be taking our time on the ride, we’re not unfit and we’re only doing one direction, split up over two days. Really, any recommended spots to stop would be very welcome. Two of us have fairly serviceable Japanese, though not fluent.

For the sunset, we will be staying right near Tatara Bridge on the East side of Omishima Island. Any sunset spot recommendations? We don’t mind a ride to the West side of the Islands. Because we’re traveling from the US, we might wake up early enough for the sunRISE, which I imagine changes and recommended spots for viewing if ya’ll have any.

Also, just to throw it in, any foodie spots that jump out would be great! Pretty flexible on the budget, but cheap thrills (under 5000 yen per person) would be even sweeter.

Thanks so much for your time!

  1. I really enjoyed my stay at the I Link hostel. Not only were the facilities pristine (and the onsen at the dome next door!) They had a set menu by reservation which looked great. They had another menu for folks like me who did not have a meal reservation, and that I can verify was very tasty.
