What is the best option I have while I leave Japan?

Hello all!

I’m planning on leaving Japan end of next month (Sep) for my 1-year MBA. I have a 50-50 chance of returning back to a better role at my current employer (would depend on what positions are available at that moment). Also, I recently renewed my residence and the new one expires 2028.

1. While I desire to hold my residence card, I do not want to pay residence tax. I’ve read somewhere that if I pay the residence tax for this year and do not have an address on Jan 1 of next year, I don’t have to pay any tax next year. Is this true and doable? If yes, can I notify at the airport that I will be returning between 1-2 years without having multiple entry visa?

2. I also want to keep my bank account open atleast for a year or two. Can I change my account address to my friend’s and use it from overseas? (Bank Account: MUFG)

3. I’ve been here for 5 years working, do you recommend to clear out my pension amount? Can I resume the pension in case I’ll be returning back after more than a year?

4. What are the processes I need to finish and do I have enough lead time to complete those?

Any other suggestions are welcome! Thank you very much!

  1. Just to clarify, what type of status of residence are you under? Student, or working?
