J-CAT

Hello everyone!

I am going on my year abroad to Japan this September as part of my university studies, and my host university told me I’ll have to take the J-CAT to see which class level I should be in.

I have never taken this test before and I was wondering if anyone else took it, how did they find it, what kind of preparation they did and what’s the format like? Is it timed? Sorry for all the questions, but I am kind of nervous.

  1. I believe It’s progressive and timed, allowing you to make it very far and get to some long and difficult paragraphs, so don’t expect to finish it if you’re not extremely proficient at the language. It will assess your level in a similar way to the JLPT. As for preparation, you just need to be on point for whatever your current level is. Other than that, maybe take some JLPT practice tests to get accustomed to multiple choice stuff in Japanese. I’m sure there are plenty out there.

  2. it’s been a few years, but it is timed and it will adapt to your level as the exam progresses. So if you keep getting increasingly difficult questions then you were doing well. If it gets easier and easier, then you are doing poorly. I didn’t do any preparation just my normal studying and it was pretty spot on with it’s assessment of me at the time.
