Questions on Shoryudo Highway Bus Pass

Hey guys, wanted to get some opinions and experiences from other travelers who might have tried the Shoryudo Highway Bus Pass before. I’m having some questions about whether this bus pass (5 days Wide Area Course) is suitable for me afterall as I look to visit Gifu area this coming October.

**Itinerary**:

**Day 1**: Nagoya -> Takayama -> Shinhotaka Onsen-guchi

**Day 2**: Shinhotaka Onsen-guchi -> Shinhotaka Ropeway, Shinhotaka Ropeway -> Takayama

**Day 3**: Takayama -> Shirakawa-go (to-and-fro)

**Day 4**: Takayama -> Hirayu-Onsen -> Kamikōchi\* (to-and-fro)

**Day 5**: Takayama -> Nagoya -> Osaka/Kyoto\*

On first glance it does appear that I should be able to get a lot of mileage out of this bus pass for most of the transits above (\*except a few destinations) to make it fairly worth my money, however I had other concerns:

* Reservations under this bus pass can only be made over-the-counter window: Could this prove tricky? Are the buses on most of the routes above likely to be full and/or reserved fully in advance?
* Would we also be able to reserve the tickets in advance using the bus pass (e.g. over the counter 1-2 days before we intend to actually activate and travel with the bus pass) or are reservations strictly only after the bus pass is activated?
* Is it comfortable to travel with luggages on these buses (both highway and local)? I’ve gathered that most of the routes above should be operated by Nohi bus, but couldn’t quite find any reviews or information about how the luggage situation might be like, especially for local routes (e.g. Shinhotaka).

Felt like I might have a few other questions but that’s about all I can remember for now, would appreciate any inputs that you guys could share on this, TIA!

  1. Alternatively, if there are any other bus passes or alternative mode of transports (train, rental car) that might be a better option for me, do share with me your thoughts!

  2. We’re renting a car from Toyata Rent-a-car. We’re able to pick up the rental car from Takayama Toyota Rent-a-car… we’re staying in an onsen-pension around Shinhotaka Ropeway…and visiting the areas around. We are then dropping the car off a few days later at Kanazawa.

    In your case, you can consider getting a car rental at Nagoya/Takayama and dropping it off at Nagoya/Takayama/Osaka
