I forgot to pay for my July’s electricity bill since I returned to my country. Yesterday I asked my friend to check my mail box and I received a letter for the july payment from kyuuden. However, the payment deadline is overdue and they say they will cancel my contract with the company. Currently I’m still in my home country and will return to japan at the end of next month. Can I still renew the contract with the same company? Should I ask my friend to call them to explain the situation first? What should I do?

I’d start by trying to convince your friend to pay the bill for you. A lot of times when bills are overdue, companies will send overly-scary threats to try to get you to pay. If you’ve just barely missed the deadline, I’m betting you can still pay at a conbini. If the deadline was quite a while ago, it’s likely your power is already turned off in your apartment. This will probably require a phone call with kyuuden, and will probably need to be done by you and not your friend.
Depending on your provider’s policy they may have already shut your electricity off. I would ask your friend to pay it for you on the off chance they haven’t yet. You can have it turned back on and your contract reinstated but it will require a phone call to them and evidence you have paid the outstanding bills. A July bill being paid at the end of September when you return will likely result in it being shut off before you get back.
