So, I applied for a change of status from a work to a spouse visa in the middle of last month. I’m still waiting for the postcard and it’s been a little over five weeks. I know it can take 1-3 months, so I wasn’t concerned until…
Someone in my family had a major health emergency back in the States and it’s looking like I’ll need to go back ASAP for several months. I’d like to leave within the next two weeks so that I can be there for the initial surgery recovery and aftercare, but my spouse visa is still pending.
My two questions are:
1. Would it be possible for my husband to pick up my new visa while I’m abroad? He’ll be coming for a few weeks to see my family as well, so is it legally allowed for him to give me my visa and then I re-enter Japan with it?
2. Would I have any chance of speeding things up with the immigration office by calling and explaining my situation?
I’ve been checking the mailbox several times a day for the past three days in the hopes that postcard will show up…
Any answers, ideas, or advice are greatly appreciated!

Your best bet is to contact immigration and explain the situation, but in general when there are extenuating circumstances there is no issue with having a family member receive/pick-up your new SOR from immigration.
They took exactly 2 months, I finally got it last week.
They’ve asked for additional docs, which I have provided immediately, but still was like wtf is taking so long.
Mine took about 6-7 weeks beginning of this year. But that also includes the new years holiday period. You will probably get it very very soon so if it’s possible to wait even a week or two more (if it’s not a situation where it looks like somebody will pass away within the next few days) then I would highly recommend waiting until you get it. Much much less headache if you’re able to get it before you go
Mine took exactly 7 days between application and approval in July this year. But looking at the other replies, that seems to be abnormally fast.
