A few years ago I asked [about it](https://old.reddit.com/r/movingtojapan/comments/kjn4t0/life_planning_moving_to_japan_in_57_years_with/) and this is my third year in my journey.
I am currently in Toronto along the [Hong Kong exodus](https://www.voanews.com/a/hong-kong-exodus-may-threaten-city-s-global-financial-status-/6709210.html). I have been studying in a community college for [software engineering](https://www.centennialcollege.ca/programs-courses/full-time/software-engineering-technology/) and it is my last semester. The study was purely for immigration purposes. The quality of the course was [pretty horrible](https://www.ratemyprofessors.com/professor/1508669), but at least it gives me a paper to put on CV.
The problem is that currently there are no junior/intermediate positions in Canada or North America, and the competition is [ridiculously fierce](https://old.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestionsCAD/comments/15wfr1b/15_years_experience_senior_java_developer_cant/). If there are a lot with 10y+ exp not getting a job, I do not see a good chance I would be landing on anything fruitful despite I would keep trying.
Back in Hong Kong, I have had 2~3 years of on-and-off junior experience on IT and coding, despite it is more of a “on the side” thing since I was on another professional job at the companies I had but I moved to more and more on the coding side. It wasn’t strictly a programming job, the jobs I had (two jobs) are moving more towards coding in terms of responsibility. (professional jobs at a tech start-up, and then building some silly ETLs on healthcare big data).
While it was my best interest to gain some North American experience before moving to Japan, it seems that it is very unlikely to be happening, at least not smoothly. So I am looking for advises.
Should I
(1) Look for remote positions in Hong Kong (pretty less money)
(2) Look for remote positions in Japan (quite impossible but sending CVs is effortless)
if things do not go well on North America? Money isn’t a problem for me in the next two years. I can afford to save nothing or in the reds for some time.
I feel that North America is not a good fit to me and I would be leaving Canada even if I have a good job no matter what. The problem is sooner or *after I finish business with Canada*.
So looking for advises to gain relevant experience before I move to Japan, that would maximize my chance to eventually land a job and on the HSP visa and be safe and happy on Japan. The only thing I am missing is
(1) 8000000yen salary
(2) at least 3y experience
(3) JPLT N1 (which is the most doable thing)
So it should be still quite a feasible goal. Thanks!

Not sure what you mean by impossible to find work in North America. Are you leetcoding? Do you have any internships? Side projects?
Edit: Just saw you’re an international student. That makes things infinitely harder yep.
