I am in the process of moving to Japan for long-term study and my primary concern is communication. I own an iPhone 14 Pro Max, the US model of which does not support physical SIM cards, only eSIM. Could anyone recommend an eSIM service that includes both voice and a phone number? The reason I need both a number and voice service is for employment purposes. I am aware that people commonly use LINE or WhatsApp for communication, but I am not sure if these platforms are used for professional communication or job-related matters.

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Japan recently enacted legislation that forces all carriers to support eSIM.
Another thing to keep in mind, in Japan generally speaking inbound calls are free. You only have to pay to make outbound calls.
Domestic carriers will require that you’re here with your residence status and a physical address before you can sign up for a plan with them. So if you’re looking for something to use during your transition period (or something you can use immediately upon arrival) you may want to check out the wiki over in r/JapanTravel which has a pretty good run down of providers geared towards tourists.
If you’re looking for a domestic carrier, the real question that needs to be asked is how much data are you planning on using? My wife uses around 20gb a month and so for her we found the best plan was with Rakuten Mobile (due to family reasons we stick to the AU based stuff, so no Ahamo or Line Mobile). For me, I usually use around 2gb per month (I’m rarely outside of a wifi coverage area) so Povo 2.0 works best for me (990yen every 30 days).
