How to stop YT ads on a smart tv?

If these were just 5-10 second ads every 15 or 20 minutes it wouldn’t be so bad. But the ads we get on YouTube are sometimes 30 minutes and constantly happen. About a 3rd of them I’m able to skip after 5 or 6 seconds, but most of them are unakippable.

I considered just paying for a YouTube subscription to get rid of them, assuming it was 400 or 500yen. Turns out it’s nearly 2000yen. So no, absolutely no way in hell I’m going to play nearly 2000 a month just stop being annoyed by these ridiculous ads. It’s like they purposely do super long, loud, and obnoxious ads every 5 minutes just to try and force you to buy the subscription. Feel like I’m being blackmailed by a TV application.

Anyway rant over.

What are my options? How can I prevent / skip YT ads on my TV?

It seems like the usual ways of doing it on your PC don’t work on a TV?

  1. they said streaming is better compared to cable because of ads. fast foward to 2023. at least in cable, they put the ads in transition of scenes. but yt ads just pop whenever. lol.

  2. I’m interested too. It’s not unskippable for 30 min tho the worst you get is 2x15sec unskippable which tells me someone has a lot of budget to burn

  3. I feel the family plan for 2280 yen is fair value, but we tend to watch more youtube than other streaming services so your mileage may vary. It allows you to share with 4 or 5 family members and since it comes with youtube music there’s no need for another music subscription.

  4. Strange. I’ve never had any ads I couldn’t skip that were more than maybe 2 minutes.

My partner uses YouTube Premium and besides no commercials it includes YouTube music which is just like Spotify. That makes it worth it

  5. Yeah, Japanese ads are annoying and very long- even longer than the youtube vid itself. I pay for premium because of youtube music. Google stopped allowing direct purchase to shift to streaming. Sigh~

  6. Annual subscription for Premium is 12800 yen. Basically paying ~1100 yen/mo for music streaming, which I would pay for anyway, and getting ad-free Youtube as a bonus.

  7. That’s weird you get unskippable ads that are longer than 15 sec. Usually that’s the longest they can run without being skipped, and anything longer you can. Anyway, on a smart TV your options are to basically buy the premium plan or deal with it. There might be some dodgy players out there than you can somehow make work on an android TV but I wouldn’t really recommend it.

  8. Get a VPN and get a family subscription in a place like India or similar. You’ll still pay, but far less.

  9. Are you signed in?
We get ads every 20 mins or so and every ad is skippable after 5 seconds. The only time we can’t skip is when you first open the YouTube app and have to wait maybe 30 seconds.

  10. A 30 minute ad is extremely suspicious. The longest youtube ads are 1~2 min and have a skip ad button.

I would recommend to see if you want to try to load a new, clean operating system on there with access to something like google play store.

Maybe try a factory reset first.

It sounds like some shady software was installed.

  11. YouTube premium. 2k a month is nothing.

You get yt music and other features (download videos, screen turned off play etc).

It’s either that or watch ads, unfortunately very few things are truly free nowadays.

Yt premium also helps the income of the channels you watch, so it’s a win-win scenario.

  12. I would buy a small form factor computer and hook that up. Use an ad-blocker browser. It would be cheaper in the long run (compared to paying for YT Premium).

  13. I just never connect my TV to the internet, and use a PC with adblock to watch things instead.

  14. Damn… I’m glad I jumped on the premium back when it first came out. I’ve been paying 780 yen a month for it and the most useful feature is background playing on my phone + youtube music since it interfaces with my car and is the default choice on my phone.

  15. There are little to no options if you dont have an Android TV or similar..

I just went with the simplest solution, pulled an HDMI cable from my desktop and watch youtube on the TV as if it was a monitor.

Plenty of other good uses too

  16. Depending on the brand of your smart TV, you may be able to side-load an ad-free Youtube app.

If you can’t do that, just get a cheap tiny stick computer/RaspberryPi/android box, plug that into the rear of your TV and watch ad-free Youtube through that.

  17. It’s Y1280 p/ month. Buy a couple of coffees from 711 instead of your usual Starbucks frappuchino and invest in the premium.

  18. VPN to buy a dirt cheap subscription. And no, you do NOT have to be running it all the time. Almost nothing better than a YT premium for a couple bucks a month.

  19. I pay 1000円ish per year I think, having used a VPN and random shopping centre in India as my address when signing up. Same reason as you. Our baby likes to listen to ASMR when he’s mad and the ad duration will make or break a meltdown.

  20. I want to drive that sweet new Lamborghini but it’s super annoying that they want me to pay for it.

  21. I’m also very irritated at the ads YT is showing me. I could be just watching some kids shows for my toddler and suddenly a 40 minutes long ads talking about pipes and water system??? Or like, 3 minutes ads for some Indian music video. Like, why?? No one in my house cares about water and pipe system, or about some Indian music videos, and we’re mostly just watching kids shows and definitely not the target audience for these ads!

  22. >Feel like I’m being blackmailed

You are using a service… You pay for it with money or ads. There’s also the choice of not using it.

  23. Press up on the controller, you’ll hopefully highlight a little !, Press on it, go through the steps, I usually choose not appropriate or irrelevant as an option, fuck YouTube ads

  24. Hook your laptop or PC to your TV, watch YouTube via chrome or whatever browser you like that also has Adblock and you’re golden.
