Motorcycle parking lots

So I’m planning to rent out a parking space for a motorcycle by my flat at Shinjuku-ku, and the management pointed out to me that the spaces are 2000mmx1000mm across all 15 spaces they have available. They are fairly cheap at 2000 yen per month, so I’d like to be able to use these if possible.

As I want to get a larger displacement bike (something like an F800GS or a Hypermotard), all seem to be longer than the above space by 5-15cms.

What I wonder is, I am aware that you need to provide the documentation for a parking space when you buy a larger displacement bike – however do you have to provide the size of your bike and your parking space (to the mm’s) when you do so?

  1. I`ve never had any requirement to provide any size information when I rented parking space for my motorcycles. I own a 250cc street bike and a 400cc big scooter. The latter is pretty big.

The law might be different for big displacement motorcycles (>400cc), but as far as I know, it really all just depends on your building’s management. If they have such a rule, then you have to abide by it. There is no legal requirement, as far as I know.

  2. There is no shakoshoumeishyo required for large bikes like there is for cars. The bike store, or the process of registering a bike in your name won’t care where your motorcycle is parked or that it doesn’t perfectly fit in.

As to whether your building management would allow a motorcycle that sticks out a bit, is something you have to sort out with them.

  3. I’ve rented spaces near my employer, and had to provide documentation (shakensho) for my bike to show that it would fit within the parameters allowed for the spaces for some, and not for others. It’s really case by case.

  4. From what I’ve gathered, the requirement to provide proof of parking depends on your municipality. I didn’t have to provide proof when I bought a bike in Tokyo, but did when I tried to register my second bike in Kobe. (Although some people here told me that the municipal employee was incorrect so who knows).

Maybe double check with your local registry office before you buy>
