Are there any interesting locations in Nagasaki (or other places) that still have some Dutch influences?

Hi!

Me and a friend will be visiting Japan from september till october. We are both Dutch and I have read up some of the history between Japan and the Netherlands. We will be doing the standard route of Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima and surrounding cities. Now I am also interested in visiting Nagasaki. I’m familiar with huis ten Bosch in the area and that Nagasaki used to be a trading hub for the Dutch but not much else. I was looking for other recommendations or tips to see some Dutch influences in Japan (besides Nagasaki is welcome too). I’m no massive history nerd or anything but it would be funny to see some semblance of home while in Japan. Things like Dutch styled buildings or districts would be nice. Any recommendations for where to go/what to see are welcome!

  1. The whole Dutch Slope area is nice with Oura Cathedral, Glover Park, and the like. Plus, it’s easily walkable to Dejima to see what a bit of the settlement would have looked like. If that’s your only focus, you’ll be done in one day, though…

  2. Not really. But it is a great town. My grandmother was from Maastricht. I don’t think she felt any Dutch vibe; but she had fun.

  3. Google images search “huis ten bosch”….
    It’s somewhat close to Nagasaki.
A little bit dutch there. 😉
