Ok to drive kei trucks on the highway?

I am looking to rent a kei truck for half a day to pick up a potential purchase, but I’m in Tokyo and need to get to Yokohama, so I’d need to take the elevated toll highways for much of the way there.

Is it ok to take those kei trucks on the highway? This is the very small type, with just a 2 meter or so bed length.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the input. I found a four-door sedan that’s big enough, so I won’t risk the kei truck on the highway.

  1. You will see many of them on the highway. Kei cars and trucks don’t have any restrictions regarding highways.

  2. Those things are death traps in an accident. I’d be very careful driving one anywhere outside of an inaka area.

  3. Just make sure whatever you put in the back is securely fastened and won’t fly off, you’ll be in a ton of shit if something were to fall off

  4. Yes, many people drive at 80 or less on the highway. Absolutely no problem to take on the highway

  5. Ya, you can use yellow plates on highway, but fuck you shouldn’t. They can barely keep actual road speed when loaded, and often become road hazards as soon as the highway actually speeds up.

  6. The law is, if a vehicle can sustain the minimum speed, 50km/h, through up hill climb and what not, then it can run on highways.

  7. It’s totally fine – especially with modern kei. I regularly do long drives in a kei truck and keep up with traffic just fine.

The speed limits between Tokyo and Yokohama are so low that I easily keep up with traffic even in the fast lane.
