Hidden Weekend Getaways from Tokyo?

As per title – any recommended weekend getaways from Tokyo?

We have been to Kawagoe, Hakuba, Hiroshima, Osaka, Kyoto, as well as Nara. Was wondering if anyone has any recommendation.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Matsushima, Miyagi is really nice. Sendai too! I don’t see Tohoku on your list so I recommend you check it out! Very easy to get to on the Tohoku shinkansen.

  2. The Unzen Mikado Hotel in Shimabara, south of Nagasaki, is about as hidden a weekend getaway as you can find. It’s a great hotel with an onsen and their dinner buffet is quite an experience. They also have a few rooms with rotenburo.

  3. Come to Gunma! While it’s a little inconvenient to get around without a car, it’s such a pretty area and with tons of things to see/do all year round

  4. Kusatsu Onsen

    Kanazawa

Both very nice. Kusatsu for the onsen, Kanazawa nice gardens and some good museums.

Although I would say my favorite part of Japan is Kochi and Ehime (Shikoku) for the food and nature.

  5. Kobe, not as packed as Tokyo, yet a very nice place to spend a day or two.
If you are more into hiking and outdoor stuff, there is Kawaguchiko in Yamanashi, but if you drive around the mount Fuji, including in Shizuoka prefecture, there are many stuff and isn’t so far from Tokyo by car

  6. Izu has some pretty nice places…. Anda Resort is great. Private baths, nice course menu, amenities, etc.

  7. Kawaguchiko in autumn. The red leaves and the clear view on Fuji san is magnificent. Kanagawa has some nice places too. Enoshima, Odawara, Kamakura and Hakone are all nice for a weekend trip.

  8. If you like outdoorsy pursuits then Minakami in Gunma is a nice area. Canyons have a glamping/canyoning/rafting facility there. There’s a mountain nearby with a cable car and nice views.
