  1. And a lot of the shoplifting is being done by elderly people who are basically living in poverty.

  2. “Even if security guards notice something off and approach the customer at the self-checkout, would-be shoplifters can pretend they had just made a careless error.”

Can gaijin get away with that? Doubt it. I read that for the first offense, stores often let Japanese shoplifters off with a warning rather than calling the cops, but don’t show the same lenience to gaijin.

  3. Another interesting thing that I noticed in Japan is that a lot of those self-checkout counters don’t have weights or anything to check whenever you scanned and placed the right item. In Europe, usually there is one or another way that checks what item was scanned, but in Japan it is more on customer being honest.

  4. Or you could just hire the tellers back because people hate self checkout anyway.

  5. Just hire one employee to stand and watch each self checkout till. Problem solved. s/

    In other ironic twists…(slightly ranty)
After aeon and other stores have implemented the self pay… I now wait for the self pay station to open. I just wait at another place rather than with the cashier. I’m not sure technology has really solved much of the problem.. what would be a better solution is to make cash only lanes and let the credit card and denshi money people use the other lanes…

Also for the love of all that is good please make 10/5 item or less lanes… I’m so sick of waiting everywhere to buy things… for food shopping everywhere I go is a 5 to 10 minutes wait. It drives me nuts…. someone tries to redeem something at the register… tries to pay in change then realizes they don’t have enough so they have to recount another way etc

Also cashiers scan every item and don’t enter in the quantity (4 chuhais). Anything with a barcode gets scanned.. Cashiers use the number key with fruits etc that’s about it.

It’s just easier to buy things online when possible.
