15 Day October Itinerary – Tokyo, Takayama, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, ?

Hello everyone, this will be my first time back to Japan since I left as a child, about 20 years ago. I’m traveling with my wife and some friends so all the planning is on me. I have many locations to go to but I want to give myself a chance to explore as well. I’ll mainly be traveling using the JR Pass, my only travel worries are from Takayama to Kyoto.

I do need to find good Yakimo spots since I love eating that, I’m also a big Ultraman fan so I’ll be on the lookout for events or shops. Also saw there are good thrifting shops but I’m mostly interested in the nature of Japan, I really want to just take in the country. Here’s what I have planned so far:

Day 1-3 Tokyo

Oct 6: •Arrive at 2:20p, Hotel Check-In, Travel around Ginza and Akihabara

Oct 7: •Tokyo Disney, Explore more of Tokyo

Oct 8: •Disneysea, Explore Tokyo, Soshigaya Ultraman St, Hamarikyu Gardens, Shibuya Sky

I’m considering switching Day 2 to Day 3 and doing Disney Sea at the end of our Trip

Day 4-5 Autumn Festival Takayama

Oct 9: •Check-In to Okada Ryokan, Harada Sake Brewery, Enjoy festival

Oct 10: •Go to Fushimi Inari Taisha, Travel to Kyoto

Thinking about going from Takyama and making a stop at Gifu but traveling with my luggage is making me reconsider that idea.

Days 6-8 Kyoto

Oct 11 • Fushimi Inari Taisha, Yasaki Jinja Shrine, Steak Misono, Kichi Omurice

Oct 12 • Hokan Ji Temple, Nara Park, Kappa Sushi

Days 8-10 Osaka/Hiroshima/Osaka

Oct 13 • Explore Chuo Ward, Dotonbori

Oct 14 • Travel to Hiroshima, Atomic Bomb Dome, Peace Memorial Park, stop at Steakland Kobe

Oct 15 • Universal Studios

Days 11-13 ?

Oct 16

Oct 17

Oct 18

Days 14-15 Tokyo

Oct 19 Yokohama, Gundam Factory

Oct 20 Depart Home

I’m undecided on my final 5 days in Japan, I know my final two days I should be in Tokyo but before that not sure. Maybe I should explore Gifu or Chiba? Either way, I’m very nervous but really excited since it’s been a long time since I’ve left. Japan always felt like a dream but now its becoming a reality. I’ve got a lot to look forward to and I hope you guys can help, thanks!

  1. You could have your luggage shipped between hotels if you’re worried with carrying it around. I would consider shipping it from Tokyo to your Kyoto hotel and only taking some necessities to Takayama for example.

Not doing both Disneys back to back sound better to me, I would move one up.
I would personally skip Disneyland and only go to Disneysea. Its great but not unique to Japan, but of course that depends on how much of a fan you are and whether you have access to the park in another location.

I wouldnt count on doing a lot of extra sightseeing after the Disney parks, they are mostly full day activities.

You could just add some more days in Tokyo at the end of your trip as well, there’s not much time in your schedule to visit the highlights there imo.
