I’m going in October and will arrive in Japan on the 9th and leaving on the 18th, flying in and out of Tokyo. Wondering if there is enough time to hit Kyoto and Osaka or maybe just one of them with the Shinkansen. Is the amount of time I have in Japan enough to fully experience Tokyo and the other cities? People who had a similar amount of time, what did you do and what do you think I should do if it is my first time?

You could get away with Tokyo 4 days, Kyoto 2 days, Osaka 2 days. In which case I would probably split Tokyo (2 days at the start, two more at the end). If it were me, I can take or leave Osaka, but I know others who love it. Kyoto is only half an hour from Osaka, but the ideal trip for me with less than 2 weeks of travel is Tokyo and Kyoto only.
Wife and I just did two weeks – we could have done what we did in 9 or 10 days except it was soooo hot out so we were in the hotel from 11am-5pm most days. I think you can do Kyoto and Osaka in addition to Tokyo if you do long days and accept that you won’t see every single thing!
You could do Kyoto and have a day trip to Osaka. Its like 45 minutes train ride between the two. I think if you wake up early and spend a whole day in Osaka its enough for the time you have.
