Life plans. Goal: Japan

Hello people, how are you doing? First of all, sorry for the English but I’m using Google translate.

I make this post more than anything to ask for opinions and/or personal experiences that you can give me since they would be very valuable to me and would help me a lot.

First, a bit of context. I am from Argentina, I am 27 years old and I am currently working in the IT area for 6 or 7 years more or less. I did 2 years of Systems Engineering but I quit for work so I don’t have a university degree.

Now yes, what is up to us. I am planning a bit about my future life, which the maximum goal is to be able to go live in Japan, so in the first instance I need a work Visa, but for a work Visa, yes or if they ask you for a university degree and for this they surround me 2 thoughts in my head:

1- As I said, I did 2 years of systems engineering so I have almost 2 full years (approved subjects), so the 1st option would be to finish my degree, graduate and then I can calmly look for a job in Japan with plans to move . This could easily take me 5 years or more, which is why I would be over 30 years old (I would be 32, when 30 is the limit for WH) and the truth is that it does not assure me that I can fulfill my dream to what it takes me. to the 2nd option.

2- Take advantage of the opportunity I have with the WH, go to Japan for 1 year, get to know the country and “postpone” the whole subject of studies for 1 year or 2, for which I would also “postpone” a bit my final goal, which would be to leave to live there (which, as we said, is somewhat complicated). The cons of this option is also that it would be a good amount of money that would have to be put up, so when you return you would have almost no savings and in Argentina it is not very easy to save anything.

In advance I apologize for the piece of text but I tried to summarize as much as possible so that anything that I have not explained well do not hesitate to ask me. As I told you, I look for experiences and/or opinions more than anything, as well as being able to chat a little about the subject since maybe there are people who have gone through or are going through something similar.

So nothing people, thank you very much if you read this far <3

I am not sure I follow. The Working Holiday visa does not require a degree so you don’t need to wait to get your degree to use it.

  3. If I were you, I would use the WH option. Like that, you’d get to know the real country and culture well enough, so you can be sure that Japan really is where you want to live long-term, and not just a pipe dream “El Dorado”.

Also, I’d recommend learning Japanese as hard as you can. This will help you immensely. Knowing the language can make or break your experience in Japan.

    Good luck!

  4. Basically what /u/ben_howler said.

I think the WH is probably the best option.

Even if you don’t end up staying over a year, having the experience of living in Japan for a year might be enough for you. Even if it’s not enough, living in Japan for a year could be a lot of fun, you never know what will happen in 5, 10 years, etc.

It does seem that learning Japanese with extreme dedication would be a good idea though, especially if you want to try to find a more permanent job while in Japan.

  5. Go on the working holiday, see how you like it, and improve your Japanese as much as you can while in Japan. See if it’s right for you. If you are still adamant about wanting to make a life in Japan then you can work toward it. Return to Argentina, finish your degree while studying Japanese, and then apply for jobs in Japan. I wish you good luck!
