Suits for foreigners in Tokyo

Hi Japanlife

Heading home for a wedding later this year. Was looking for any recommendations people have for getting a decent suit in Tokyo as I’ve grown out of my old one – thank you beeru. Happy to spend max 100000 yen. I’m 6 foot and a general build, any advice would be appreciated.

  1. I recommend Ginza Tailor for three reasons:

    1. Their bespoke suits are well made (own 3 of them, I’m 6ft slim build)
    2. Their entire service and catalogue is available in English
    3. Free alterations ( I had my suits altered after COVID tummy bulge for free, they said I can come back to get it altered once I get fit again)

However, Ginza Tailor may stretch your budget so, I also recommend Sarto (also in Ginza and in Shinjuku Isetan Men’s Building) for three reasons:

    1. A lot cheaper than Ginza Tailor
    2. Possibly the 3rd best fabric selection I’ve seen in Tokyo
    3. Excellent pre/post purchase service; some Japanese maybe required if you want to go full-bespoke or just ask for their 88,000 yen line and leave it to tailor’s choice.

If the above two recommendations do not workout for you then visit the Shinjuku Isetan Men’s Building and you can find several suit makers who can sell you a pre-made one under 100,000 yen or make you one at that price range.

*Notable mentions:* TAGARU in Daikanyama or Ebisu or Omotesando.

  2. I am 6’2 and got an made-to-measure two-piece suit from ONLY Yurakucho for under 100,000 yen. Would be cheaper but I added a few bits and bobs which brought the price up. Takes about four weeks for the suit to be ready after measurements are done. You can pick it up yourself or have it sent to you once it’s ready.

  3. Aoki can do these formal Suits, but you should look for Aoki max.

You have to choose the fabric.

  4. My go to is Azabu Tailor – their quality and customization is really great. They have options in the 70-90K range that could fit your budget depending on your add-ons.
