Trend of Japanese Pop Music??

This might not be an actual trend, but something I’ve just started to realize (maybe just behind the times). But is Japanese music trending towards having a super upbeat rhythm or beat that seems to in a sense contradict or clash against the not-so-happy lyrics? The major examples I can think of is PAKU by Asmi, Yoasobi, and even Yorushika in some cases. Or am I just exposing myself to that section of the genre? What do you all think?

  1. Keep listening. Just like vegetables, more quantity and more variety.

Question your listening context and perspective.

    Repeat above steps.

Make decisions based on observations. SHare.

  2. I think you’re just exposing yourself to one specific genre, the cool thing about Japan is that some of the alternative and slightly less mainstream music still has a very strong following and loyal fanbases.

I dunno the genre, but jazzysport, punpee, slack, stuts, tofubeats are all p chill.

Even hoshino gen has recently taken a less poppy vibe and I really dig his newer stuff, like sarashimono

  3. Mainstream trending J-Pop only has the one beat available, so they need to overlay both happy and sad lyrics (these are the two options).

As others have suggested, go beyond mainstream (also go beyond current 10-20 years back have some great songs).
