Apps like Duolingo where you write in Japanese?

I’m looking for an app like Duolingo where you have the option to actually write the Japanese characters to answer questions. I’ve been finding duolingo to be good, however I’m missing actually writing the Japanese characters. For context, I studied japanese for 10ish years in school and went to Japan. So I’m not looking for simple Hiragana stroke order practice. I haven’t studied Japanese for about 5 years now, so I’m very rusty, but I’m finding the simple “tap to select the answer” not very engaging and it’s not the sort of practice I want. For example, a lesson could include the reading comprehension, selecting English or Japanese pre written answers, but also includes writing out the words/sentence in Japanese (using your finger or a pen).
Not sure if something like this actually exists. Any recommendations welcome.

  1. Bunpro does it for grammar and iknow does it for vocabulary. Neither one is actual full sentences though.

  2. Duolingo has a toggle to switch between the word bubbles and typing the answer. It may not be available on the beginner stage of a “level”, but it should be there for the second “crown” (assuming crowns are still a thing in Duolingo, but you probably know what I mean). And if you want to draw instead of type, there should be handwriting keyboards available, dependent on your device.

  3. I know you’ve specifically mentioned writing/drawing characters; but I wonder if like Brzlat1 mentions, if activating the handwriting input function on the device can satisfy that requirement. For instance [https://support.google.com/gboard/answer/9108773?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid](https://support.google.com/gboard/answer/9108773?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid) for the Gboard Google keyboard

As to ‘typed input’ I have enjoyed Lingodeer and recently Mochimochi (Mochi Tech) apps, since their can have ‘select the answer’ and also ‘type the answer’ style questions. Once I started using them, I realized how poorly I knew a word using Duolingo, or even my anki cards (Oh, that word has a ã‚Œ notã‚Š, etc.) I use the Gboard swipe input, and I’m recalling forgotten words by swipe pattern now.
