Winter in Fukui-Ken?

Hello!

I have been offered a job placement in Mihama in Fukui prefecture.(美浜町福井県) It ticks all my preferences (on the ocean, small town, bigger towns nearby) but I am concerned about the winter. Since Japan summers are awful everywhere, I wanted a place with little to no snow. I know bordering the Sea of Japan I am to expect snow, I am just curious about how much. I have been living in the mountains in America and last winter was brutal as well lol. So snow isn’t my favorite.

So my question is, does anyone know how the snow is on the coast near Mihama or at least in southern Fukui Prefecture? I’d appreciate any insight.

For reference I have lived in Yamatsuri (Fukushima), Oosaki (Sendai), Tokushima (Tokushima) and Ageo (Saitama). Sendai was awful, Fukushima was meh, Saitama had like 2 snow days, and Fukushima was the best re snow. Where I live now (Southern California mountains) we had like a month of snow and got stuck for 2 weeks after 7ft dropped in a week, and the season lasted from like Dec to a last storm in May. It was a rare occurrence but I am tired of snow haha. I’m guessing at least the Mihama area is flat so not as treacherous with snow.

Also if I don’t take this position, it doesn’t mean I can’t get another placement. (My company is very good with consideration of employee’s preferences.)

Thank you for any information!

  2. I lived for 5 years in Echizen (before it was called Takefu-shi) and I worked at the Murata company, where there are many Japanese-Brazilians!
Yes, the winter of the whole Fukui Prefecture is severe, with a lot of snow, every year!

  3. Congrats! I thoroughly enjoyed my time living in Fukui and it’s always somewhere I enjoy returning to. Compared to SoCal you will get more snow and colder temps, but next to Fukushima I don’t expect it will be much worse. The snow typically lasts from January to February, but is mild for most of that time. Mihama shouldn’t get too bad. I think the temps are the worse part, so just pack warm sweaters for inside and at least one good jacket.
