Seeking Career Pivot Advice

Hey y’all

I’ve had a bit of a unique career trajectory in Japan. I started out as an ALT with the JET Program and over the last ten years (and a little change), climbed the ladder to my current position as Vice-Principal in a Japanese school. As much as I’ve enjoyed this journey, I’m reaching a point where there seems to be limited room for further career advancement (moving into a Principalship is a long, long waiting game….). More importantly, I want to find a role allows me to take on some new challenges and possibly one day transfer to a role outside of Japan (now that my parents are getting up in age).

The bulk of my work involves managing people (100+) and undertaking administrative responsibilities. On a day-to-day basis, I’m deeply involved in short-term and long-term project management, budgeting, and overarching administrative and operations related tasks. Over time, I’ve found that my strengths and passions lie in coordinating, planning, leading teams, and ensuring that tasks run smoothly and efficiently.

Given my background, I’ve recently been eyeing roles in Corporate Learning & Development (L&D) as well as Project Management. The former because of my educational background and the latter because of the transferable skills I’ve developed as an administrator.

However, I’m curious if I might be missing out on any other potential avenues. Are there other roles or fields where my experience and skill set would be valuable? If anyone has made a similar transition or can suggest industries/roles that could be a good fit, any advice would be greatly appreciated.Thank you in advance!

**TL;DR:** Currently a Vice-Principal. Seeking advice on career pivot options beyond Corporate L&D and Project Management. Looking for roles that leverage people management, project coordination, and administrative skills.

  1. Sorry I can’t help but that’s so interesting that a foreigner could make vp at a japanese school!
I’m surprised at the lack of comments. This seems more interesting then the usual divorce posts…

  2. you are so far advanced in your career that I think 99.9% of redditors are not qualified to give you any career advice

that being said, imo a pivot like yours can only be done through networking, positions like what you are looking for aren’t collecting resumes off the public, you almost have to be referred by somebody

  3. Can you handle being talked down to by bosses and clients after being treated with respect as a teacher and as a vice president by students and your coworkers for 10 years?

edit: vice principal not president lmfao
