Applying for JET in Brazil

Hey everyone, I was looking at the JET program through the Japanese consulate in Brazil and it seems that I can only find content related to the CIR position (coordinator for international relations) in Brazil…. I was thinking that perhaps Brazil doesn’t send JETs for the ALT position since it’s not really an English speaking country…? Can anyone verify this for me please?

Also, can anyone tell me if I can apply for ALT through the Japanese consulate in Brazil as a Canadian? Or can I apply through the Japanese consulate in Canada remotely? Is that a thing?

  1. Do you have Brazilian, or Canadian citizenship? You have to apply at the consulate where you hold citizenship, and all application/departure steps (i.e., interviews, flight to japan, etc.) must be done out of your home country’s consulate – so if you apply as a Canadian, your interview and departure HAVE to be out of Canada.

Edit to Add: [This](https://jetprogramme.org/wp-content/MAIN-PAGE/intro/participating/2022_jetstats_e.pdf) is the placement data for July 2022 participants by home country. JET did not have any Brazilian ALTs in 2022. Whether or not this was because they don’t place Brazilian JETs as ALTs or because there were no competitive candidates cannot be said for certain, but if you can’t find any info on the ALT position on the Brazilian website, my bet is that it’s the former.

  2. If you do apply, request Gunma (Ota if you can) since there is a sizable Portuguese speaking population there already.

  3. It doesn’t matter where you live currently, you can apply to the Japanese consulate in Canada remotely! I applied while I was overseas working in Australia and Brunei. As long as you attend the interview in person (I did mine remotely since it was covid during the time I applied).
