  1. Cheapo smartwatch finally died (RIP), amd thinking of replacing it with something more expensive.

    Preferably

    – O2/pulse readings.
    – Durable
    – Pairs well with Android.

Any recommendations welcome, thanks in advance.

  2. FUCKING SHIT I am so sick of this shitty AU plan! 7000+ for one gig of data! I got stuck with them because I don’t have a credit card. Anyone got a rec for a cheaper plan I with just a little data without HAVING to have a credit card? I have a debit card or I’m fine with direct automatic transfer from my bank account if that helps.

Related, anyone got an Amazon credit card? I applied for some cards years back and wasn’t able to get them. This one seems easy to apply for. It works like a regular credit card, right?

  3. Is a masters degree in the sciences from a Japanese university competitive on the global market? Japan is in the top three for biochemistry research but I don’t know how degrees from Japanese universities are viewed.

  4. When a job posts a salary range and adds that “benefits and travel expenses not included in range” but doesn’t post anything about a bonus, do you think that’s a green or red flag?

Also, when a place has a job posting and advertises the 120 days off, that includes weekends right? So basically just 10 days of PTO right? Seems sketchy to make it that complex.

  5. Starting to prepare for iPhone 15 launch. What are my options if I want to get a new phone without the shutter sound?

I figure it would be easiest to just order from the Apple U.S. online store and ship to Japan, is that an option? Or will activating the phone in Japan curse it with the shutter sound?

Also relatedly, where’s the best place to trade-in an old iPhone in Tokyo, Apple stores?

  6. I notice the restaurant culture is different on pickyness of food preparation. For example, you shouldn’t request extra items or to hold items in general.

But, let’s say I order a steak medium rare and it arrives well done. Or, the karage is still pink inside. Is it acceptable to return the dish?

  7. I’ve been tasked with finding activities for a friend’s 5-year old who is visiting early October.

The thing is, back in Helsinki, this kid is going to kids yoga, kids discos and does 1-on-1 lessons with established artists. So, a very “hip”, rich kid.

Is there _anything_ I can arrange? Craft activities? Events? What do the young kids of like SMAP members who go to international schools here do in their free time?

Disney pooh-poohed, Team Lab already done.
The kid speaks English & Spanish in addition to Finnish.

  8. This is definitely a BOSS question. When travelling for company reasons, let’s say Kanto to Kansai in distance. Is it okay or understood that Shinkansen is the best method? Or do some companies use bus services?

  9. What shops sell battery powered skill saws? I went to my local Cainz but they are out of stock till the 10th. I tried googling, but couldn’t get a decent result. I’m trying to find names of shops and seeing if any of them are near me on Google maps. I would prefer to pay with folding money, so ordering online would be a last resort.

  10. Amazon lost my package and I need a refund but customer service representative is not available? I only get lead to a ‘FAQ’ page and only ‘Return package’ is available (no refund). Anybody else encounter this?

  11. Found myself in the possession of a lot of honey. Luckily it doesn’t go off lol. I’d like to try some new dishes using honey if anyone has any they’d like to share!

I’d prefer savoury but I’m open to anything! Any good honey recipe recommendations? 🙂

  12. Anyone use WAON on their Apple Watch? Before going to the ministop this morning, I checked the balance and it was over 1000 yen. When I went to pay, the POS said I only had ~400 left; and, when I checked the watch again, it agreed. Paid with cash, and when I got home I checked the transaction history, and apparently the last purchase (August 28) wasn’t deducted from the watch until sometime between me checking (1000+ and) purchasing (400).

From what I understand, the waon (and nanaco) on the watch are basically stored-value and function the same as a physical card. So, the delayed deduction seems odd to me. I’ve had the nanaco app on the phone and the actual value on the watch be out of sync before; but, never due to a missed transaction like that. Any experts?

  13. Anyone else have trouble with Docomo network? It’s been unusable for 2 weeks, I thought because I had run out of data but it’s equally shit today

  14. I wanted to buy the JR Tohoku pass in advance for winter vacation, since they are raising the price by 10k from October 1st. Is it possible to buy it before the price increase or is there a time frame during which I need to use it?

  15. I work as engineer. Am I allowed to do side gigs? Like taking orders on twitter for hand/head massage therapy once or twice a week. Thinking about doing it free for first timers to get some traction.

  16. Is there anywhere near Tokyo where I can get a Jersey tomato ?! Or something close to one ?! Please I’m dying here !

  17. Any dandruff shampoo that actually works? Tried Scalp-D “for oily skin” because my hair/skin gets oily fast but that didn’t work. Trying H&S for dry skin now and that’s not working either.
