Looking for work in US prior to moving (remote opportunities?)

I was curious if anyone has any recommended strategies / tips for job hunting in the US while still living in Japan? My wife’s US visa application is still in process with US immigration and it will take time. In the meantime, I’m looking for new work in the US. Ideally I’d be able to stay in Japan until her visa is approved, which means remote work is also ideal. For now I’m applying to jobs found via websites like Career Builder, Zip Recruiter, Indeed and LinkedIn.

I’m guessing finding work while outside of the US is the toughest way to do it, but if any of you have had success doing so, I’d love to get your advice!

  1. If you’re near a base you could work for the military and transfer back to the US once your wife receives her visa

  2. This is going to be a tough sell for an employer, because having a remote employee working from Japan would trigger tax “permanent establishment” rules, (this is vastly simplified) making the company liable to pay taxes to the Japanese government on all income that is traceable to your work. Most companies aren’t going to want to deal with that shit.

  3. You can subcontract as a sole trader for a US company and pay tax in Japan. You invoice they pay and you fix your own taxes
