Long story short, got hired by NOVA, I’m fully aware it’s pretty brutal. However, I’m paranoid about the legality of this “dummy contract.” I haven’t sent them my paper work yet, and realistically I know use their company for a VISA then find better work ASAP within 6 to 12 months. I wasn’t sure if I should go through with them or try to find a better option? I know the CoE process can’t have multiple companies, and getting an apartment in Japan is brutal by all accounts.

Listen, I’m all for getting a new job but having the mindset of “this job sucks” before you even have tried it, that’s not a good thing either.
Ofc you’re gonna have a horrible time if you already decided the work is shit.

Don’t take their apartment!!! Work for them for a few months. Save money and change jobs.
Despite all the hate that they get, I worked for them and had a good experience. Nice colleagues, staff, made gaijin friends with the other teachers so I wasn’t lonely, lovely students.
The bad is the pay, and their apartment. Just get out when you can and don’t get stuck there. They are also bad with paperwork, but know the law and pressure them if they’re being slow.

So, I had the same question because I arrived in Japan through NOVA but they tried to change up my placement and didn’t even tell me where I was going until I had been here for almost a month… anyways, I ditched them and found a new job. Immigration didn’t care and neither did NOVA as when I told the I was quitting they just stopped communicating with me. xD Work for them for a bit and jump ship like everyone else.
