Instructor visa to Sofa visa

I’m an ALT and have an instructor visa and also married to a military man through proxy marriage. I haven’t yet proceed to process my change of name on my passport for the reason that the Philippine embassy postponed the process of marriage report for proxy marriages and they couldn’t give me a specific date when are they going to process again.

My husband is going to be transferred to another area in Japan and we are planning to move in together by next year and that being said, I’m aware that I need to report to Japan immigration that I won’t be working in Japan government anymore because I will be living with my husband on the base. I have an ID issued by the US military base and my name is on his order too. So the problem is, I still don’t have my husband’s last name on my passport would I be able to get a SOFA VISA?

We already called and asked the legal office on the base however they couldn’t understand what we are trying to explain and we are asked to go there personally by next week to explain it further.

But this is just bothering me for the past few days and I just want to have an idea about the process and if there’s anyone who has or had the same situation as mine.

Thanks in advance

  1. There’s no requirement for name change in the US, and Japan doesn’t require name change if both people are not Japanese. Just use your marriage certificate and its translation.
