Hello,
I’m currently contemplating a six-month work assignment in Shimada, Shizuoka, Japan. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and unsure of what to anticipate, especially since I’ve never lived outside the United States before. If you’re an American who has made the move to Japan, could you kindly share your experiences with me? What are some key aspects I should be aware of or prepared for? Your insights would be greatly appreciated.
What are the visa requirements and restrictions?
Are there any specific legal or documentation requirements I should be aware of?
I saw an apartment online and it looks to be about $300 per month. Right now i pay $1600 for an apartment so is there something i’m missing?
What are some common customs and etiquette in Japan that I should be aware of?
What are the primary modes of transportation in Shimada, Shizuoka, and how can I get around?
Do I need to obtain a local driver’s license, or can I use my existing license?
What items should I pack or bring with me to Japan?
Thanks

The rent doesn’t look like a weird number to me. Shizuoka is a prefecture in the mountains, and it’s in the countryside, so I wouldn’t expect a much higher rent range. Make sure you get a place that is NOT on the first floor though, as you may encounter problems with bugs. You’d also probably need a car and an international licence, I think with an American licence you need to pass a test in Japan because they’re much more strict on driving regulations.
Konchiya.
1. Your employer should handle your visa. What kind of work do you do?
2. $300/month is probably accurate for a small 1-room place in Shimada. It’s the equivalent of somewhere on the Virginia coast. Consider spending $500 for a better place.
3. Customs? You’ll never fit in. Just try to speak softly and don’t be an ass. Don’t wear your shoes in the house.
4. There’s likely a bus line into Shizuoka proper. All the public transportation is right there on Google Maps. (Google is your fren)
5. Are you going to try and buy a car? Don’t. Buy a mama-chari bike or maybe a 50cc scooter.
6. The only “American” thing that you might not find is solid deodorant, and shoes if you’re above 28cm feet.
