I’m possibly having a surgery in Japan and I would like to do a small investigation of the surgeon first. Is there anything like the [National Practitioner Data Bank](https://www.npdb.hrsa.gov) (NPDB) of the US, here in Japan? A place where I could check if a specific doctor has any lawsuits or payments for malpractice. If there isn’t… any Japanese forums you recommend for me to look for reviews and/or experiences of other people? I tried facebook and reddit but it doesn’t seem to find anything

No such thing exists in Japan. If it did, there wouldn’t be enough paper to print the names on.
You can look at 口コミ for specific hospitals. Very hit or miss. National Data Bank? No. I can go to mutual shrinks in the same day (I don’t) and get what ever I want. Laughable.
Not that I’m aware of. The best marker for a good doctor or surgeon in this country is that they were educated or worked abroad.
Japanese medical degrees aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.
Don’t quote me on this, but I’m pretty sure that if such a thing existed the distributors of it would be sued for defamation.
Knowing Japan’s libel laws, yeah no wonder nobody has set one up, private or government.
You can find data regarding number of operations per hospital but not per surgeon, unless the hospital publishes that data themselves.

As for malpractice, there is a site that has license suspension data – I’ll see if I can find it.
If anyone even insinuates anything to that extent then they’ll get sued (me).
My lawyer said, “even if what you said is true, it’s illegal in Japan.”
The lawsuit was dropped (the more they dug in, the more incriminating it became) but I still had to pay my lawyer for defending me. That is how Japan works. They punish both sides even if you were right. Who’s going to come out on top financially, me or a doctor? It’s ridiculous.
