what are your toughts on Yukata for men?

for casual use outside home: good looking or cringy weeb thing?
for strolling around, in Japan, cool?
for walking around as an argentinian white guy, its respectful or disrespectful?
Im guessing its more on the cringey side, (for a white guy), but, but but… I would like to feel \~\*special\*\~ (Uwu) for once lol

  1. It would be ‘weird’ even in Japan for a Japanese guy outside of summer months and special events. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it at all, but no-one does it.

  2. It is fine, I see guys in bakuroyokoyama wearing yukata often enough. Some of them even go vintage like from the 30s. No one is going to say a single thing about what you wear as long as you wear it normally.

  3. I mean, people usually don’t wear yukata or kimono outside of festivals or special events, or if they’re wearing it for work. You can go to kimono rental shops as a tourist though.

  4. * Cringe

Beyond giving you occasional side eye, nobody would give a shit if you’re wearing a yukata, but you’ve completely missed the season.

Your three little weebies are going to cry UwU, UwU, UwU, all the way home.

  5. Why not. Go for it. If you want to feel real special though, you can go for legit Kimono. Kyoto has some rental Kimono shops for men beyond Yukata. Yukata literally means bathrobe.

  6. I’ve never personally worn them for anything, but I’d pay good money to see you show up at work in one. I need a good laugh.

  7. Completely cringeworthy UNLESS you’re going to a festival or are staying at a ryokan. And even then for festivals, you want to get something understated and classy (simple black with grey stripes, simple prints, etc.), not the one with gold and silver dragons all over it. The ryokan usually lets you choose if there’s more than one selection, but they’ll all be pretty basic.

  8. I think they look good on guys. I wouldn’t cringe.

Depending on where you live, you do see Japanese men wearing yukata or kimono outside festivals (the wrestlers around Ryogoku look and smell fantastic, I’ve seen some middle aged guys around Yanesen looking sharp).

  9. Don’t worry OP. Whether it’s cringe or not, I will still be on your side. Go for it UwU

  10. Do you ever sometimes wonder if there’s a Japanese forum somewhere and a Japanese guy is asking ‘think it’d be weird of me to wear a Tux like ALL the time? Or would I look like an idiot. If I was white would it be OK then? Is it cultural appropriation?’

  11. Situationally dependent. At an ryokan/onsen/onsen town, absolutely. Outside of Japan at a Japanese temple for obon, sure, go for it. On the street in Argentina (or anywhere outside of Japan), yeah, weeb.
