Advice – Goal to move to Japan

Hello,

Throwaway because my mains username is embarrassing and I can’t change it….

I am currently trying to move to Japan ASAP. I am asking for peoples opinions on my probability of getting work as the job hunt has been challenging so far.

I am a computer science graduate from a UK Russel group with 1st class classification. I’ve got about 2 years of post graduate experience as a software engineer working with cloud and security (mostly AWS) and 2ish years of experience with databases during university. I am a non Japanese speaker and currently studying but I would like to move out to learn as immersion is key.

I’ve had one interview so far but I’m finding it hard to actually find jobs to apply to. Does anyone have advice on where to look other than Tokyo dev?

Appreciate any and all advice will try to respond to any questions.

Thank you

  2. Here’s my thought: [https://jp.indeed.com/jobs?q=software+engineer+relocation&l=](https://jp.indeed.com/jobs?q=software+engineer+relocation&l=&vjk=7779c31a9d6cc347)

By searching listings that have those keywords in English, I’m thinking it’s more likely you’ll get by without Japanese. And by including “relocation”, you’ll find companies that are more likely to sponsor a visa.

This of course reduces your options quite a bit. Improving your language skills would open up a lot more options. Already being here, e.g. on a student or working holiday visa, and being able to apply for change of status would make it easier (enroll in a language program and kill two birds with one stone). Otherwise, more years of experience. At 2 years of experience, it’s going to be rough going.

Or take the route I did and work for a foreign subsidiary of a Japanese company for 5 years and apply for a transfer.
