Everyone suddenly wearing masks again?

Is it just me, or was there a sudden surge of people wearing masks today? Feels almost coordinated.

  1. We’re in the middle of possibly the second biggest (at least) SARS-2 wave we’ve had. I’ve noticed an alarming number of people getting sick this summer, and that seems to be backed up by wastewater readings as well as reports about school closures due to COVID and other viruses.

  2. A lot of people, including myself, are getting sick recently. I haven’t tested myself for anything else but covid, which was negative, but there seems to be some kind of infect making the round. Don’t know if it is the flu or whatever, but I was wearing a mask as well for 2 weeks so that I don’t infect anybody else. That’s probably the biggest reason, I would assume.

  3. I got bronchitis last week from going out maskless and riding the bus. Masking up from now on till all the nasty heat dies down. A lot of my friends are getting sick this summer too.

  4. Huge spike in COVID cases and plenty of people are getting non-covid related sickness as well. Makes sense to me that more people would be wearing masks again.

  5. I got COVID in late July and promptly gave it to my family. And we all had 3 vaccine shots too. And I continually wore a mask too – if COVID wants to get you, it will!

  6. Lots of covid going around again. At my work alone 5 people over last 2 weeks. Which most had no contact with each other.

  7. I mean, even before covid people wore masks, and since there’s an uptick in colds and infections going around, and people don’t have the luxury of calling in and working from home anymore, my guess is it’s as much preventative as it is because they’re currently sick.

  8. It is September 1: Fall began today, and it’s no longer uncomfortable to wear a mask.

Seriously, I haven’t noticed a surge today, but many schools are back in session starting today, so perhaps that has something to do with it: either some people are wearing masks to protect the children or you simply noticed a lot of kids in masks.

  9. Corona is spiking; hospitals are reactivating units in temporary buildings which were added during the height of the pandemic, then closed when things settled down; there is another as-yet-unidentified illness which causes very high fever and almost no other symptoms other than the occasional sore throat; flu infections are also up here and there.

I’ve had 8 students come down with COVID in the last 6 weeks (including a doctor and his family), my son and another 5 students had the mystery fever.

The typhoons are also kicking up a fair amount of dust, which is affecting people’s hay fever.

  10. We had a talk at work yesterday about how lots of people are testing positive in the 本社, it sucks but we’re having yet another covid season.

  11. We just had a lovely round of corona at our house. It’s hitting my friends and students too. Back to wearing masks.

  12. My wife is a teacher, a loooot of kids are missing the beginning of this semester because they have Covid.

  13. damn it, and i literally just yesterday decided “you know what, im going to stop wearing masks today” and now cases are rising again…

  14. I’ve a friend in Yokota air force base. He’s recovering. Said 11 of the people at his work caught it. The 12th wasn’t around when whoever was contagious brought it in.

Look, watch the poor people who have to work with the public. They’re a good canary.

  15. I tested positive for covid three weeks ago. I woke up this morning with a fever and body aches again. Im going to start wearing a mask also because this is ridiculous

  16. I stopped wearing at the beginning of summer but then I had 2 infections within months. my 2nd infection tortured me way longer than the others. So I’m now back to wearing. Not gonna catch another.

  17. Summer’s stupidly hot and the mask-off call was to save some ppl from heat stroke too, most likely. But obviously the numbers weren’t fully down and ppl thinking it’d subsided got sick when they’re off guard. Bunch of ppl I know in person and online reported catching it for the first to third time ever.

  18. My kindergarten age son brought Covid home and my wife caught it. I had to look after both. Ultimately I also caught it. This is the third time I catch Covid- luckily this time it was much lighter than previous times- just a sore throat and low fever for a couple of days. My wife was knocked out for several days and my son also had a high fever. Guess I’m acquiring some semblance of immunity by now since this was my third time catching it. Either that or I was just lucky.

  19. When sickness starts going around, people wear masks. This is the norm before COVID, so not sure why it is surprising now.

  20. 2 days ago masked lady at McDonald’s behind me coughing every 20 seconds, lo and behold, I feel a bit sick today

  21. I got Covid a couple of weeks back – and I’ve had four shots. It wasn’t much fun, and I can only imagine what it’s like if you haven’t had any shots against it. I agree that there’s an uptick in masking, although it’s nowhere near what it was like when Covid was new and unknown, where it was like 99% of people. I was on the train this morning, and I’d guesstimate that about 60-70 per cent of people were wearing one. Nice thing about Japan is that you’re unlikely to run into some moron who tries to make you feel bad for wearing a mask if you choose to.

  22. there is a large number of respiratory issues going around my company – covid, adenovirus, rs virus, etc

  23. As a teacher, the amount of notifications I’ve gotten about both teachers and students getting sick makes masks look good.

  24. I’m guessing due to the summer holidays and surge in tourism (vaccination no longer required for foreign tourists too), Covid and maybe the flu in general is spiking.

  25. I wore my mask for 2.5 years. Got covid this holiday season, but I was on a plane for 14hrs and stuck in the airport for over 24 so that was kind of to be expected. Then I wore my mask til about May or June. Didn’t wear it for like 2 months and got covid after being fine for the previous 3 years, save the airport incident, so it seems to just make sense to me in most situations.

  26. I’ve ever stopped, especially indoors. There’s been a summer surge. These generally happen in the same season. These folk may well be saving you from getting infected. (Day 6 to 10 after symptoms start, mask wearing to prevent infection is requested). But if you want to feel threatened by a piece of folded paper, dozo.

  27. Both covid and influenza cases are rising again so it’s not surprising that masks are coming back among those who previously stopped wearing them.

  28. Not just covid, but there was a nasty summer cold that was running around where I live. Wipe you out for a day with a nasty fever then leave you congested for another 3-5.

  29. It’s just like Golden Week. Lots of people stopped wearing during the vacation period so they decided to also not wear them once work restarted. Then lots of people got COVID again and people put the masks back on.

I was in the States for three weeks and didn’t wear a mask once. I’m wearing one now though!

  30. Got it early august. First three days was awful. Then headache/fever went away. But lost taste and smell for 4 days. After a week felt better but took two weeks to get back to normal energy levels. Cough lingered for 2 weeks ish. Good luck everyone!
