Friend needs to buy a new phone, will his travel SIM work?

My friend’s currently in Nagoya for a few days without a phone, it just stopped charging. He’s been using an unlimited data sim from Japan Experience for internet.

I took him to BIC earlier today to pick up a used phone to replace it, but the customer assistant there wouldn’t sell, as he couldn’t guarantee it’d work with a travel SIM, and wouldn’t let us test. Couldn’t just buy it either as no returns.

I’ve been saying he should just bite the bullet and risk it, it probably works fine and worst case is he gets a pay as you go SIM and writes off the £30 he spent on the travel SIM.

I’m biased though as I have my own plans and don’t want to babysit him all week, because I’m fairly certain he”d be eaten by wolves if I let him out without Google Maps.

  1. Just need to know if the phone is sim locked or not. If it is, he can only use the phone with the company that it is locked to. If the phone is unlocked, it does not really matter if it is a regular sim or a travel sim. And especially because it is a Japanese phone, it won’t have problem with not having some specific signal band used in Japan and maybe not back in your country.

From what I see, since October 2021, new phones sold have to be unlocked, but if it was originally purchased before that date, it might be locked.
