Japanese used car dealer are scamming foreigners?

Can that be real? – Last year I’ve bought a car for around ¥ 1,000,000 and now, because I’m leaving Japan all the big car dealers are telling me can only give me ¥ 250,000 for this car. I really feel scammed by either the car dealer I bought it or by the ones I was trying to sell it.

  1. Because used car dealers outside Japan are considered most trustworthy?

Hint: it has nothing to do with you being a foreigner.

  2. That’s just how buying something and then selling it to a business goes. The business wants a profit so they marked the item up a ton, you bought it, now the next business wants to buy it for less than market value so they can mark it up and sell it for profit. That’s capitalism, baby!

  3. Hard to say without more details like how much did you add to the clock, did you ding it up, timing of rego. Even the need for a new set of tires could be around 10man depending on the make and model.

Used car prices were pretty inflated during peak covid, so it might just be a matter of bad timing. There is also a point where value drops off a cliff.

On the other hand, “used car salesman” is an insult for a reason. As the other comment alluded to, your title probably doesn’t need the first and last words.

  4. Used car in Japan is considered nothing like outside of Japan, tbh. They are not scamming you, that’s just how it is. It’s not as common to buy second hand car in Japan, as people in other country does.

go somewhere else, and try to sell with better price.

  5. Yeah, that’d be the same in pretty much every country. You’re gonna make a loss reselling goods, especially any kind of machine that degrades with use, and if you’re going to resell to a business, even more so.

Try selling it privately if you’re looking to get something closer to what you paid for.

  6. This is literally every car dealer in every country.

It’s just the way it works.

In their defence, they have to service it, clean it like it’s new and then offer a new warranty to the next purchaser. As well as make a profit on it. All while taking the risk that something significant might have happened to it in the intervening 12 months.

  7. Used car dealers and real estate agents are shady bottom-feeders at best, everywhere in the world.

That said, what is going on here depends on a lot of factors and you need to give more information if you want any sort of answer.

What make/model/year of car did you buy?

How many kilometers did the car have on it when you bought it? How many does it have now?

How about the condition of the car? Have you added any scratches, dents, dings, or other issues? How is the paint condition?

Have you smoked in the car?

Did you buy the car with shaken on it but now the shaken has expired or will soon?

Did you buy it from a dealer who specializes in selling to foreigners? You’ll always pay above market value for that because you’re paying for the non-Japanese service and the extra hand-holding.

How much of the 1mil JPY was the cost of the car and how much was tax/insurance/shaken/other fees?

When you’re looking at a car in the 1mil JPY or less range the percentage loss between buying from a dealer and selling back to a dealer is likely to be pretty big. Even in the **best** case I wouldn’t expect you to get more than 500,000yen but without more details it’s impossible to help you understand what is going on.

  8. Guys I’m not here to fight. I’m sorry I mentioned that it might has something to with my origin.
But thank you for the advice you guys gave me. I think I just have to accept the price they are willing to pay me.

  9. Thank you for your nice and friendly answer. I really appreciate that.

I’ll let you know the specs later if you’re okay with it. I would really like to hear your opinion.

  10. When you sell a car to a dealer they will only buy it for a fraction of the market value. That’s a common practice, they do it to everyone.
