How easy is it to make friends as a foreigner and POC in Japan

I’ve been contemplating moving to Japan for a while but am frankly scared I’ll be lonely. What is the social scene like in Japan for foreigners (specifically dark skinned foreigners).

Also – I’m an indian woman from canada (mentioning because I’ve been told that it matters)

  2. Entirely depends on how outgoing you are, where in Japan you are living, level of Japanese speaking ability, your hobbies and interests, the type of people you want to have as friends, etc…

  3. Not sure how the POC is relevant here, your particular ethnicity might harner a somewhat different reception depending, and distinguish between white and non-white isnt very useful.

  4. I’m coincidentally an Indian woman from Canada too and I’m currently living in Japan as an intern. I’d say it depends on where you plan on living. I’m in Kyoto and people here feel quite reserved. People in Osaka have been very social imo.

  5. Depends on what you’re here for to be honest! I’m here as a student and have made plenty of Japanese friends, as well as other POC, with little to no problem. Though this could have something to do with the fact that I’m very outgoing and pretty approachable. If you’re here for work, I couldn’t really tell you myself.
