Finished Genki I and workbook but still feel very rusty on a lot of the grammar, anyone have a resource for more grammar exercises?

I feel like I need more writing practice in Genki I grammar before I move on to Genki II. My reading comprehension is pretty okay but I struggle to produce anything more complicated than something likeりんごはあかいです. わたしはりんごをたべました. りんごがすきです.

  1. You may laugh at me, but Pimsleur Japanese helped me apply grammar and build sentences better. What’s funny is it doesn’t actually teach you much grammar. You listen and repeat.

But because you know a lot of grammar already it will engage your knowledge and make you begin to recall different sentence structures.

  2. If your reading comprehension is okay but production isn’t, you need to focus on the latter specifically.

Did you do the writing prompts in the reading/writing sections in the back of the book? If not, try those. They should challenge you to figure out what you know how to express. If you did and need more practice, try keeping a daily journal in Japanese about how the day went, what you plan to do, what you have to do, etc.

  3. IMO it is a mistake to first try and become an expert at very basic N5 grammar before moving on. N5 grammar will be everywhere going forward. Every single sentence. You will get plenty of practice with it by progressing to Genki II and doing more than necessary now is just slowing you down.
