Would you be able to get the same salaries of foreigners working in IT (Software Development) despite taking a non-traditional path?

I know the general consensus is that Japanese universities are bad and all. However, if I went to a Japanese university for undergrad (the major doesn’t matter much), had a nice coding portfolio among the other requirements would it be possible to get up to the salaries that are paid on TokyoDev/JapanDev for people that have a few years of experience in a foreign country? I’m fine with working for peanuts for a few years (shinsotsu) if I can job hop afterwards to increase my salary to those levels. I guess the main question is, are these companies paying good salaries only looking for foreign work experience, or do they not care as long as you’re qualified?

For some context I’m a senior in American high school, having lived in Japan long term before, I hold a N2, and can financially support myself there. The thought of living in the United States for an additional 7\~ years (finish HS + undergrad + work experience) sucks having experienced a much better life in Japan. I’m willing to take a different path even if it’s difficult.

  2. The positions of TokyoDev are almost exclusively mid-senior level. You definitely won’t get that salary at entry-junior level. If you have a tech degree and work your way up, you can get there.

Keep in mind that the yen is in the toilet right now. If you plan to transfer yen to USD at any point, it’ll be painful.
