Anyone using an Unifi Dream Machine Pro SFP port instead of NTT Modem?

I have noticed that the little thing where the optical cable attaches to comes out and it’s an SFP port. I am wondering if anyone is using this SFP attachment directly into the SFP port of an Dream Machine Pro?

I know it doesn’t support IPoE but where I live the PPPoE service doesn’t seem to be congested (rural area) and my provider ways that customers don’t share IP addresses with their service.

  1. I’ve used SFP-ONU with a buffalo switch (actually the only device where it worked). If UDM supports SFP only (and not 10G SFP+) then it *might* work.

Here’s a list of stuff that other people tried: https://wikiwiki.jp/fletssfponu/%E5%8B%95%E4%BD%9C%E7%A2%BA%E8%AA%8D%E6%B8%88%E6%A9%9F%E5%99%A8%E4%B8%80%E8%A6%A7

I see udm-pro is on there and it says pppoe doesn’t startup but whether the problem is SFP or not is unknown. It’s market as “working” in the left column so.. maybe just user configuration error.

You’re not going to break anything by trying – well, depends on your model of SFP ONU, some of them have a flimsy pull handle that will break if you breathe wrong way on it.

  2. I’ve done it before, pppoe will work. You will have to find and set tcp mss clamping to a ntt friendly value.

My advise is not to buy a unfi edge device and if you have one, don’t use it or sell it to some poor sap. If you have unfi APs just use the controller software.
