Question about travel on the Nankai rapit train

Hello, I was in Japan and flying out from Osaka on the weekend. I had booked the Nankai Rapit Beta train in the evening directly using the website https://www.club-nankai.jp/sta/web/OnetimeTop.do

This is the email ticket I received:https://imgur.com/a/TEKEOWW

But when I reached the station (Shin Imamiya), they asked me to buy an additional ticket with what they called the fare difference. Additional ticket here: https://imgur.com/a/Wh10TTT

This was pasted in the train that matches the amount I initially paid: https://imgur.com/a/gQgiOxq

Any idea why they would not charge me the full amount at the first go? I found the whole process confusing, and it slightly stressed me out because I needed to make the airport on time to catch my flights.

Can someone explain why this process is the way it is? I was also thinking it might be worth giving them feedback since the Expo is happening in Osaka in 2 years and other travelers might run into this confusion too.

  1. I think some express trains running to or from the airport have a base fair plus a supplement ticket so you have to buy two tickets or use an IC card for the base fare. I do not really understand the how and why of it though.

  2. I think it’s mostly makes more sense for people who have an IC card. No matter what, I tap in and out and pay the fair for the journey. But if I want to ride the Rapit, I tap in, pay ¥500 or so extra and get the special ticket, ride the train, and tap out as normal.

Essentially you will always pay when you enter and exit the stations for the journey you took. But you can buy other tickets to supplement the journey 🙂

    It’s definitely confusing!
