Shimanami Kaido without cycling?

I’d love to see the route and the different islands but I’ll be travelling with my wife who has a chronic pain disease so a long bike trip is not possible but is there another way to do it? Would jumping on and off buses work or would that be difficult?

  1. Jumping on and off bus will be difficult mostly because there is not that much bus between the islands and even within the islands. I’ve been in March and decided to hike a mountain on the first island and once I took the ferry, there was like 3-4 bus on the whole day.

Relying on bus and ferry you would be obviously much more limited on how much you can do and it can be tricky to work with the schedule. I would honestly consider renting a car, it would offer much more flexibility to actually see things around the different islands. You might not be able to stop on the bridges for the view, but you could easily go on top of some of the mountain that have great views.

  2. Could she do e-bikes? Or maybe an e-scooter (or a regular moped. A few passed by me on my trip, although I find them noisy and annoying)
